You have decided to take the plunge and commission custom upholstered furniture for your home or latest client. One suggestion from the interior designers that we regularly work with to their clients is for them to order custom pillows.
Three tips we suggest when it comes to pillows:
1. Asymmetry is the best way to create an interesting space. Place two pillows on one end of the sofa and one at the other. Using odd numbers of objects is a good general rule for accessorizing.
2. Bigger isn’t always better. Anything larger than twenty-four by twenty-four inches is probably going to overpower a sofa, especially a love seat.
3. Less is more. More than five pillows on a regular size sofa or more than two on a loveseat is too much.
Here are some things to know about having custom pillows created at Barnes Custom Upholstery:
Choosing Pillow Sizes. First, it is important to figure out what size pillows you want and how many of each size. We are happy to create any size pillow you desire or you can choose from industry standards. Here are a few common sizes to consider.
Square: 16″, 18″, 20″, 22″, 26″
Lumbar: 12″ x 18″, 12″ x 24″, 14″ x 36″
Boudoir: 12″ x 16″
Picking Out Fabric. At Barnes all fabrics are Customer Owner Materials (COM) which allows you to pick the fabric that complements your custom sofa or chair.
Fabric Type. Woven fabrics such as cotton, silk, velvet, and linen are preferred for pillows. Most fabrics for home use are dry clean only.
Color. Pillows are an opportunity to have fun with color. From a design perspective, we advise choosing a neutral color palette for the major “unchangeables” such as your sofa and liven up your room with pillows that contrast and are vibrant.
Patterns. Here is another opportunity to be bold and creative. Pick a color group for you pillows and mix and match patterns. Stripes, florals, geometric, and abstract are all wonderful options. Decide if you want to use one fabric on both sides of the pillow or for example a silk on the front and a linen on the back. It is a good idea to match the design of your fabric at the seams- especially with stripes, plaids, and geometric prints. The distance between where the pattern begins and ends before beginning again is referred to as the repeat. Be sure to go over the amount of fabric you will need for patterned fabric.
Scale. Larger scale prints traditionally look best centered on a cushion or pillow. As a general rule, larger prints are better suited to larger pillows and smaller prints to smaller pillows. You can absolutely mix up the scale to be more interesting and surprising- just make sure your choice looks intentional.
Yardage. For most decorative throw pillows you will need 1-2 yards of fabric each, depending on size, details, and patterns you choose to include. Our experienced cutters and upholsterers can determine how much fabric you will need by sending us a sample or picture of your fabric.
Closure. We offer two options for your custom pillows- sewn covers and invisible zippers. Zipper closure allows you to bring a new fabric for us to create a new pillow cover for your pillow when you want a room refresh.
Fill Type. We offer 3 different fill options to choose from- 10/90 Down & Feather, Blend, Blend Down, and Shredded Dacron Synthetic fill. When properly cared for, 10/90 Down & Feather pillows can last a lifetime, and they will maintain their smooth profile longer than synthetic alternatives.
