How to Care for Upholstered Furniture

January 8, 2017

Maintaining your new upholstered furniture is easy and does not take up much time. Follow the guide below to have great looking upholstered furniture year after year.

Choose the Right Fabric

The best way to give yourself an advantage on maintaining your furniture is your fabric selection when buying  custom upholstered furniture. Choosing a fabric that is appropriate for your lifestyle and the type of piece will extend the furniture’s life. There are many advances in technology that have made synthetic fibers a better choice for heavy use furniture or simply choosing a fabric that does not have loose weaves or too much texture can protect from your four legged family members.

Protect Your Fabric

Barnes Custom Upholstery offers finishing treatments that protect from soil and/or water that protect your piece from spills and dirt being absorbed into the upholstery fabrics right away. Prompt cleaning to any spills in your home following the proper care methods below.

Fluff and Flip Cushions

Cushions are made of soft materials and should be regularly fluffed and flipped to refresh the shape of the cushions. Firmer cushions take less fluffing and softer down and feather blends take a bit more effort to reshape. Any cushion that is sat upon should be fluffed once a week. You can extend the life of your upholstered piece by periodically flipping loose cushions and moving them to different positions. This will ensure that they wear evenly and help maintain their shape.

Vacuum

To remove general soil and prevent dirt from becoming embedded in the fibers vacuum your upholstered furniture weekly. You can also use a soft bristled brush to gently whisk away dirt.

Spot Clean

Spills are an inevitable in life and the best way to combat them is in a timely manner by blotting with a clean towel. If you need to further clean the spot use a gentle cleaner cleaning solution and check with the manufacturer of your fabric to determine if you need a water or solvent based cleaner. Apply the cleaner with a soft brush in a circular motion to work into the fabric and then vacuum when dry.

Avoid Sunlight and Pollutants

Too much sun can damage your fabric, causing it to fade and even to fray. When planning the design of your space it is important to keep in mind where your new piece will be located.

Airborne pollutants such as fumes from cooking or smoke can also harm your fabric. It isn’t always easy to avoid that from happening, however, proper ventilation can help. It can also help with odor control, as upholstered furniture can easily absorb odors.

It is recommended to have your upholstered furniture professionally cleaned every few years. The more regularly that you follow the steps above the longer your upholstered furniture will remain pristine.
